Jumpstarting Literacy in your Classroom

Hello everyone,

I mentioned a book on my Facebook page yesterday. It is called ‘Jumpstart Literacy’ , by Pie Corbett. I use it daily. I use one lesson per day as a warm up to my main English lesson. I promised to start sharing some of these lessons with you, so here is one I used today!

It is called Word Ladders. It is a word building activity which helps build vocabulary. The word ladder can be on anything, themed is usually best. The aim of the game is to make a list of words within a given time. The timing is important in this activity. I would give no more than four minutes to it.

The children must make sure that the last letter of each word becomes the first of the next word.

An example might be an animal ladder:

Lion,

Newt,

Tiger

Rat

Toad.

See how far the children can get in four/five minutes!
