CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who finished their final teaching practice today! After a ten week haul, I hope you are all out celebrating tonight! Once you have slept for a week or so to get over the teaching practice tiredness, then you can start on the next step of your teaching journey.

First things first, register with the teaching council if you have not done so already. If you have to register under the further education section while your results are pending then do, it will result in a simple switching sections when you do get your final marks, so it speeds things up a bit.

Next, start creating your CV. I would recommend keeping it succinct and to the point. Then, you need to visit the schools, armed with your CV, statutory declaration form, form of undertaking, proof of TC registration, and references if you have them.

This time of the year can be very busy for substitute teachers. I found that this time two years ago when I was subbing, especially in rural areas where teaching principals are using their release days. Just be ready and prepared to go! I am sure you have a huge amount of resources from teaching practice, so once you have something for all age groups you’ll be ready and prepared for anything.

Also, more teaching posts will be advertised from May onward so it would be no harm to download the standard application form and start working on that, it takes a while!
